In most cases, because a company offered it for free. I did not know this was happening at scale until I went looking. Now I cannot stop thinking about it.
The biggest AI companies in the world are giving your kid’s school free tools right now, with expiration dates on those offers that almost no parent has been told about.
When Anthropic and OpenAI extended free educator access to schools, they set end dates: Anthropic’s commitment runs through June 2027, OpenAI’s through June 2028.[1] After that, the pricing is unclear. What is clear is the strategy. You give away the product to build the habit, then convert to a paying relationship once the habit is strong enough to hold. Social media companies did it with free accounts and a generation of teenagers. Gaming companies did it with free-to-play models and in-app purchases. Now it is AI companies’ turn, and they are doing it inside classrooms, where the product carries the credibility of school authority.
The numbers make the ambition visible. Eighty-five percent of teachers and 86 percent of students now use generative AI in their schoolwork.[1] The tools are inside the classroom. The question is not whether AI will be part of your child’s education. It is whether your kid understands why those tools arrived, who put them there, and what happens when the free offer runs out.
When a school hands your kid a tool, your kid trusts it without asking why.
Schools carry a kind of authority that brands and apps do not get on their own. When a teacher says “we are using this tool this year,” the question of why it is free does not come up for most kids. It does not come up for most parents either. That gap in questioning is exactly what the market is designed around.
Most school conversations about AI tools focus on what students are allowed to do with them. Almost no one is asking who built the tool, why it was made free, and what happens when the free period ends.
Common Sense Media reviewed Google’s Gemini AI for schools and rated it high risk.[2] The reasons were specific: the tool gives identical responses to a sixth grader and a high school senior, and it can surface inappropriate content. It is integrated into Google Classroom by default, putting it in front of millions of students without a required review process. Most parents were never told this before their kid started using it.
The cognitive risks compound the access risks. This is not a technical skill. It does not require understanding how AI works or knowing what large language models are trained on. It is the same reasoning adults use when they notice a sponsored article, question who funded a study, or recognize that a recommendation comes from someone with a financial stake in the outcome. Kids are not born with this habit. It has to be modeled and practiced until it becomes reflex.
I started thinking about this after my oldest, who is thirteen and about the most driven learner I know, mentioned that her school had added a new AI writing assistant to their platform. She liked it. It helped her get her ideas organized faster. I asked what she knew about who made it. She looked at me like that was an odd question. She had never thought to ask.
That is the gap. Not that she uses the tool. She should use tools. But she uses it without any mental model for why it exists. Just over half of kids have been taught how to use AI safely.[2] Almost none have been taught to ask why a free AI tool is free. Those are different skills, and right now only one of them is being taught anywhere.

The signs are subtle. A kid who notices that an app sends more notifications after a few days of not using it is noticing an engagement loop. You might also hear it in how they talk about content. A kid who asks where a story came from, who paid for an ad, or whether a recommendation comes from someone with a stake in the outcome is building the same habit in a different context. Incentive Awareness is transferable. It starts with understanding how a free game works and ends with the same question applied to the AI tool that arrived in their classroom without anyone explaining why.
Start one conversation about who made the free AI tools in your kid’s school and why they are free.
Find out which AI tools your kid’s school is using this year. Most schools have not sent a clear parent notification. You may need to ask the teacher directly or check the school tech policy page. When you find the tool’s name, look it up together with your kid. Ask who made it, whether anyone reviewed it, and whether it is free because someone decided education should be free or free because the company has a plan for later.
Introduce the “free means what?” question. The next time your kid mentions an AI tool they used at school, make it a habit to ask: do you know who made that and why they offer it for free? You do not need a correct answer. You are building the habit of asking. Over time, your kid starts asking it before you do.
Start with something your kid already uses. If your kid plays a free mobile game, begin there. Ask together: how does this company make money if the game is free? Kids can usually figure it out. Ads, in-app purchases, attention data. Once they understand the model in a comfortable context, it transfers naturally to the school setting. You are not teaching distrust. You are teaching the same awareness every informed adult applies to any offer that comes without a visible price.
The companies competing for your kid’s attention inside their classroom are building a market. The free offer is the opening move. Understanding that does not make every AI tool bad. It makes your kid a more thoughtful user of everything they pick up from here.
My oldest will keep using the AI assistant at her school. I am not interested in fighting that battle. What I want is for her to eventually hold it the way I want her to hold any tool that arrived without anyone asking her permission: with a clear sense of who built it and what they get from her using it.
The back-to-school season is one of the better moments for this conversation. New tools arrive every fall, and this fall more of them came with a business plan that was never shared with parents. The companies that built them know exactly what they are doing. Teaching your kid to ask the same question those companies are counting on no one asking is one of the more durable things you can do this week.
