AI Toys for Kids Are Designed to Be the Perfect Companion. Here Is the One Skill Worth Building Before That Resets Their Default.

Here is what I found, and the one skill worth building before those defaults are set.

The “social gate” that wires early emotional and language development needs real contact, not an optimized response. A Family Online Safety Institute survey published July 10, 2026 found that 27% of parents think their child used generative AI last week, while 38% of children say they did, an 11-point gap that shows how quickly these tools become part of children’s lives before parents register it.

The toys are designed to be warm, patient, and endlessly curious. On paper, they sound wonderful. But an NPR story published this week described these products using a phrase that has not left me: “The Trojan Teddy Bear.” I have a seven-year-old who already talks to the Roomba. I know exactly which child in my house would bond with an AI companion first. This is what I found when I dug in.
AI toys are no longer a novelty. They are a growing market category specifically designed to occupy the companion role in a child’s life.
The smart AI toy market is projected to grow at 18 percent per year through 2035.[1] Companies are embedding large language models into stuffed animals, dolls, robots, and action figures that can hold real conversations, remember previous interactions, and adapt to a child’s personality and preferences over time. SoftBank Robotics and Wonder Workshop are among the companies already selling products with sophisticated emotional responsiveness designed for children specifically.
NPR’s Planet Money reported on this category in depth on July 14, 2026, profiling Dana Suskind, a child development expert who used the phrase “Trojan Teddy Bear” as the original working title for her book on the subject.[2] The name captures the specific tension: AI companions are cuddly, curious, and patient in ways no human can sustain over time. They learn what your child responds to and optimize for it. They never get tired, annoyed, or distracted by their own day.
Suskind does not dismiss the technology outright. She sees promise in AI tools for learning and for giving researchers better data on how young children communicate. But she has a specific concern about a mismatch: these toys are arriving designed to be the ideal companion, and no one has yet studied what happens when young children spend their formative hours with them.[2]
The qualities that make AI toys feel like perfect companions are precisely what makes them a developmental risk for young children whose social brains are still being wired.
Researcher Patricia K. Kuhl at the University of Washington identified what she calls the “social gate” in children’s brains.[3] When young children interact with a live person, specific neural circuits activate that do not fire the same way with recorded sound or video. In landmark experiments, infants exposed to a new language through live human interaction learned to distinguish its sounds. The same exposure via audio or video alone produced no learning at all.[3] The social brain is not activated by content. It is activated by contact.
AI companions are endlessly engaging, perfectly patient, and relentlessly affirming. Real people are not. That imperfection is not a flaw in the relationship. It is what relationship is.
Suskind uses a food analogy to describe the risk. If children eat mostly fruit snacks, a synthetic version of fruit, they begin to find real fruit less satisfying by comparison.[2] An AI companion is designed to be more immediately rewarding than a real person. Real people get annoyed. They say “not now.” They sometimes give the wrong answer and have to correct themselves. That friction is not a flaw in human interaction. It is what teaches a child that relationships require something from both sides.
A recent Family Online Safety Institute survey found that when asked whether their child had used generative AI in the past week, 27 percent of parents said yes, while 38 percent of children said yes, an 11-point gap.[4] That gap exists for AI on screens. AI toys are harder to track. They look like the stuffed bear already on the shelf.
The skill is Human-First: the habit of reaching for a real person before reaching for an AI companion, especially in moments that shape how your child understands connection.
This is not about banning anything from the house. It is about which direction your child turns by default when they want comfort, company, or conversation. A child who has built the Human-First habit looks for a sibling, a parent, or a friend first. They might still use the AI toy. But the sequence matters. The first reach shapes the expectation of what connection is supposed to feel like.
Alex Imas, an economist at the University of Chicago, told NPR that the jobs and relationships that will hold value in the future are in what he called the “relational sector,” work that requires reading a room, building trust, and navigating genuine human ambiguity.[2] Your child cannot practice those skills with a companion that never has a bad day, never needs something back, and never gets tired of the conversation. They can only practice them with people who sometimes do all of those things.
The challenge is that Human-First is not the path of least resistance. AI toys are specifically designed to be more immediately satisfying than a distracted parent or a sibling who wants something back. Building the habit means making the human option consistently feel worth the extra effort, not just available. That is a parenting choice more than a technology restriction.
A child building Human-First chooses people when people are available, even when the AI option is easier and closer.
Notice who your child approaches first when they want to talk through something. A child who comes to you, even when you are distracted, even when you say “give me five minutes,” is practicing something important: they are tolerating the uncertainty of a real person. They are learning that real relationships require patience from both sides, and that the wait usually produces something the AI toy cannot. That tolerance, practiced early and often, is exactly what the social gate research suggests is the skill worth protecting.
The reverse is also worth watching. A child who reaches for a toy or device first and turns to people only when technology is unavailable is developing a default that becomes harder to redirect as they get older. It does not have to be a crisis. But if your youngest consistently tells the stuffed animal what happened at school before telling anyone in the family, that pattern is worth gently noticing and redirecting now, while the habit is still forming rather than already formed.
Three things that reinforce Human-First this week, none of which require removing anything from the house.
When your child comes to you instead of a device or toy, name it out loud. Something as simple as “I noticed you came and found me instead of asking the toy. I’m glad you did.” It takes five seconds. But naming the behavior turns it from a reflex into a choice, and children learn which choices matter by watching adults pay attention to them. The goal is not to make the AI toy feel forbidden. The goal is to make the human option feel noticed and valued.
Create one daily moment that is low-tech and intentionally boring. One car ride without anything playing. One dinner where phones are away and no one is “on.” Boredom is not the enemy here. It is the gap that makes a real person more interesting than a companion that never runs out of things to say. A child who learns to find people interesting in the absence of something more entertaining is building exactly the preference that Human-First requires.
If an AI toy is already in your house, be specific with your child about what it is. Tell them: “This thing is interesting and fun. It cannot miss you. It cannot be proud of you. It cannot need something from you. People can do all of those things.” Kids understand this more readily than we expect. Naming the distinction makes the difference real rather than leaving children to discover it after the habit has already formed around the wrong comparison.
The “Trojan Teddy Bear” is not a warning to throw the toy away. It is a reminder that the moments when your child could reach for a machine and reaches for you instead are more important now than they have ever been. AI will keep getting better at being warm, patient, and engaging. The only thing that will not improve with a software update is a real relationship, and a child who knows that from experience is the one who will still want the real thing when the options multiply.
Suskind’s concern is not that AI toys are harmful in the way we usually talk about harm. It is subtler. When a child’s brain is still learning who to turn to when things are hard, the default it builds early becomes the one it reaches for automatically later. The “social gate” does not stay open forever. The window to build Human-First as the default preference is widest when children are youngest and you are still the most available option. That window is open right now.
