They’ll choose which companies to support based partly on AI ethics stances most adults today don’t fully understand.

The essential skill is ethical reasoning about technology — the ability to identify whose interests a technology serves, what values it embodies, and what trade-offs it requires. This goes far beyond “screen time” conversations or stranger danger warnings. It’s about developing a framework for evaluating any new technology: Who made this? What can it do? Who benefits? Who might be harmed? What choices did creators make, and what alternatives existed?

Children naturally ask “why” questions, but most families don’t extend this curiosity to technology. When kids encounter a new app, game, or AI tool, the conversation typically focuses on safety or time limits. Rarely do parents ask: “What do you think this company wants from you? Why did they design it this way? Who decided what this technology can and cannot do?” Yet these questions form the foundation of technological literacy.

The Anthropic case provides a real-world example of this reasoning in action. A company faced pressure to modify its product to meet government demands. It evaluated competing priorities: business growth versus safety principles, market access versus maintaining restrictions, short-term contracts versus long-term values. The company made a choice that cost them significant revenue. Whether you agree with that choice or not, the reasoning process — identifying stakeholders, weighing trade-offs, accepting consequences — is exactly what our kids need to learn.

Signs Your Child Is Already Building This Skill

Kids who ask questions about why apps work certain ways, who express skepticism about claims they see online, or who notice when rules seem unfair are already developing ethical reasoning about technology. That middle schooler who questions why their game requires so many permissions? They’re thinking about data and consent. The elementary student who asks why their school uses one learning app instead of another? They’re beginning to understand that technology choices reflect values and priorities.

Resistance can also signal developing ethical thinking. When kids push back against monitoring apps, question school surveillance systems, or critique how platforms handle their data, they’re exercising judgment about appropriate uses of technology. The form might be frustrating (“Why don’t you trust me?”), but the underlying skill — evaluating whether a technology’s implementation matches stated values — is precisely what we want them to develop.

My thirteen-year-old recently asked why her school uses one learning app instead of the one her friend’s school uses. I did not know the answer. We looked it up together. That is the conversation we are trying to create more of.

What You Can Do This Week

Start treating technology choices as family discussions rather than parent pronouncements, asking your child to help evaluate options and explain their reasoning.

I will be honest: these conversations do not always land. Sometimes my daughters look at me like I have assigned them extra homework. What I have found is that the ones that work best are not planned — they happen when a real news story creates a natural opening, like this one did for our family.

Pick one technology your family uses regularly and research it together. Choose an app, device, or service everyone interacts with. Spend 20 minutes finding out: Who owns it? How does it make money? What data does it collect? What rules govern what it can do? Let your child lead the research for their age level. The goal isn’t comprehensive analysis — it’s modeling curiosity about technology’s origins and operations.

When news about AI, social media, or tech companies comes up, pause and ask questions before forming opinions. The Anthropic story offers a perfect starting point: “A company said no to a government contract because they didn’t want their AI used for certain weapons. What do you think about that?” Don’t rush to explain your view. Let them work through it: Is it a company’s job to limit how customers use their products? Should national security override other concerns?

Create a “tech values” list together that articulates what matters to your family. Sit down and identify 3–5 principles you want to guide technology decisions in your household. Maybe privacy matters more than convenience, or transparency matters more than features. Write them down. When choosing new technologies, refer back to this list. Does this app align with our privacy values? Does this game’s business model match our beliefs about fairness?

Practice these conversations when stakes are low. Discussing why your family chooses one mapping app over another, or what you think about stores using facial recognition, builds the foundation for bigger questions later. The goal isn’t reaching perfect conclusions — it’s developing the muscle of ethical technological reasoning.

As AI becomes more powerful and ubiquitous, our children will face decisions we can barely imagine. They’ll vote on AI regulation, work alongside AI systems, and live in communities transformed by automated decision-making. The Anthropic conflict — a company willing to sacrifice federal contracts rather than compromise on AI safety principles — offers a teachable moment about values, trade-offs, and the importance of thinking critically about technology. What matters isn’t whether you agree with Anthropic’s decision. What matters is ensuring your child develops the skills to evaluate such decisions thoughtfully when they’re the ones making them.
