Your Kid Used AI to Write Their Homework

AI makes dishonesty effortless and easy to rationalize, the old conversation about cheating no longer covers it.
This isn't about the grade. It's about whether they're building something real. Go in curious, not angry.
"Hey — did AI write this or did you?"
"I want to talk about something without it turning into a big deal. I noticed your homework looked different than how you usually write. I'm not here to punish you — I just want to understand what happened."
"I'm so disappointed in you.": Makes them defensive instead of reflective. Shuts the conversation down immediately.
"I'm not angry. I want you to understand what you're actually giving up when you let AI do your thinking. You're smarter than you're giving yourself credit for — and I need you to believe that too."
Within 24 hours, sit with them while they redo a portion of the work themselves. Keep it low pressure. The goal is showing them they can do it, not proving a point.
This is a repeat incident and your school has a formal academic integrity policy, some schools move to consequences without warning. Contact the teacher before the school contacts you.
Raise the real stakes. "What happens when AI isn't available and someone needs you to deliver — and your name is on it?" College, interviews, and real work all require thinking they can't outsource.
